    We’ll help you gain a voluntary placement, giving you an increased understanding of working as part of a professional team in a school or early years environment. You’ll also become familiar with the main childhood and education programmes at Harrogate College.

    This course is ideal for adults aged 19 or over looking for a new career path in a school or early years setting. It combines hands-on skills with academic elements and you’ll benefit from learning in a practical environment alongside established professionals.

    The programme is broad-based and industrially relevant, covering many aspects of biological and chemical sciences. It is taught almost entirely in laboratories and features a very large amount of hands-on experience of practical science.

     

    About the course

    Students will learn about scientific concepts related to the human body, diseases and drugs and then explore these ideas further through practical laboratory investigations. The practical work will build confidence in working in a laboratory environment and give students the opportunity to develop skills in using a wide range of equipment and scientific instruments, performing standard operations that are common in current industries in the chemical science or bioscience sectors. 

    This course would suit anyone who has some basic knowledge (either through study or work) of biology or chemistry and would like to find out more about how:

    • the human body works
    • diseases are caused and can be treated
    • microorganisms are used in the production of medicines and other useful chemicals
    • drugs interact with our bodies 
    • understanding the biology and chemistry of drugs enables us to design better medicines.

    The course was developed in order to close a skills gap as identified by the Leeds Local Enterprise Partnership. The course was written after consultation with a number of local employers, who informed teaching, content and assessment methods. We have formed close links with other employers and continued to elicit feedback on how well the course prepares graduates for employment. Teaching is delivered in purpose-built laboratories with industry-standard equipment and is designed to develop the key skills and knowledge demanded by employers.

    The course is delivered in purpose-built laboratories in the Harrogate College. Our recently installed science laboratories provide effective working spaces with work benches and modern equipment, to replicate a realistic working environment.

  3. Foundation Degree Games Development

    Develop the creative and logical skills needed to develop games that excite and delight gamers around the world. Our Game Development Foundation Degree covers 2D and 3D asset creation, game environments, game engines, programming languages, special effects, game theory and more, giving you all the skills you need to create your own games.

     

    About the course

    Blend artistic and programming elements to create games, effects and mechanics that when combined, help to form a game from the concept stage through to creation. You will explore game trends, game history and popular culture and mechanics. Additionally, you will explore and analyse game design and gameplay.

    You will work across a variety of projects, developing multiple games design skills, understanding the theory of play and underpinning your designs and creations with practical 3D, 2D and programming knowledge. You will create game ready assets and environments and will script in game engines such as Unity and Unreal to make playable games.

    By gaining an understanding of multiple disciplines, you will become an indie games developer able to produce games from scratch. To reflect industry practice we promote the use of agile workflows and industry events such as Game Jams and Game Societies.
