British Sign Language (BSL – Ripon)

Course overview

We are now offering the Level 1 British Sign Language course from Ripon.

This 20-week Level 1 course is designed to teach you how to communicate with deaf people in British Sign Language (BSL) on a range of topics that involve simple, everyday language use. You will gain the basic skills and confidence in production and reception of British Sign Language.

The course will run on a Tuesday afternoon at Ripon Community House (12.30-3.30pm).

BSL Level 1 – Learners will focus on introducing themselves, exchanging greetings, discussing simple topics like weather, family, and daily routines, and understanding basic instructions.

• Who is this course for?

  This course is aimed at learners who wish to either learn new or further develop their communication skills and a whole new language. These British Sign Language (BSL) Level 1 course will teach you the skills to help people with complex communication disabilities. It will prepare you to communicate effectively in sign language.

  During this BSL beginners course, you’ll learn the skills to:

  • Understand and use a limited range of simple words and sentences in BSL
  • Take part in simple, everyday conversations in BSL
  • Give and follow simple directions or instructions in BSL
  • Give and follow simple, familiar statements or descriptions in BSL

  • Harrogate College also offers the opportunity to progress onto L2 BSL
• Assessment Types
  This qualification runs for 20 weeks and is assessed through three separate externally assessed exams using conversations in British Sign Language.
