From September this year, Harrogate College will be running its fifth
Supported Internship programme in conjunction with Harrogate and District NHS
Foundation Trust.
A Supported Internship is a work-based study programme, taking place in an
employment environment. It is a government initiative for young people with
Special Educational Needs and Disabilities, most of whom will have an Education,
Health and Care Plan or a formal diagnosis of Special Educational Needs.
Our programme runs over the college academic year, starting in early
September and finishing in mid-July. It follows the pattern of the academic year
so interns would have the usual college holidays. Apart from one day at college
where the interns maximise their employability skills led by the Employability
Tutor, the internship is set at Harrogate District Hospital. There are three
extended work placements, usually in different departments for each term of the
programme. Interns start in the first term with one day at college and two days
at the hospital but build up to a full week by the end of the final term.
A typical day at the hospital start with a quick catch up in Herriot’s
Restaurant with the Employability Tutor and an Employability Support Assistant.
Interns will then go to work in their respective departments from 10am and
finish at 3.30pm when they have a daily debrief. Each intern would normally be
placed in a different department so they feel a full part of that team rather
than a group of college students together on a work placement.
Applicants must be 18-24yrs old and have an
EHCP. If they wish to be considered for a Supported Internship,
there is a recruitment & selection event planned for Friday 10th June from
12pm.
The internship will involve learning and developing your employability skills, becoming independent with the goal of gaining full time employment at the end of the internship.
The Supported Internship offers the opportunity to deliver a wide range of transferable employment skills. Some of our previous interns have found work within the NHS and others have found work with other organisations offering similar roles to the ones they have performed on placement at the hospital.
