Adult / 19+ Students

How do I apply?

Shortly after you have enrolled, a unique application form will be sent to the email address you supplied at enrolment. If you do not receive this email, please email supportfund@leedscitycollege.ac.uk for a new link to be resent. Once you have completed the application, it will then outline what evidence you will need to bring and where to take it.

19+ support

If you are aged 19 or over and have a household gross income of £30,000 or below, you could be eligible for support with meals, travel, childcare, equipment and other course-related costs. Please note this support doesn’t include loans or finance but instead consists of goods and services to ease the financial burden whilst you are studying.

Travel

You may be able to receive assistance with the cost of travel to and from College if you live more than 1.5 miles from your campus of study. The shortest walking routes on Google Maps is used to calculate the distance.

Passes may be provided for use on Trans Dev buses. This is at the discretion of Harrogate College and the most suitable method of transport will be determined upon receipt of a successful application.

Discretionary Meals

By studying at Harrogate College, you may be eligible for a meal worth up to £3.60 for every day that you are timetabled to attend.

If you have a gross individual income below £30,000, your student ID card may be activated to also work as a cashless card in the canteens at Harrogate College.

Stay connected

Make sure the college has an up-to-date email address for you and that you are regularly checking your emails. We want to be able to support you during this time.

Fees Concessions (19+)

If you are over the age of 19 and would like to study a FE course you may be eligible for a tuition fee, exam fee or course cost concessions depending on your eligibility.

  • 19+ and unemployed*.
  • You are 19-23 and this is your first full Level 2 qualification.
  • You are 19-23 and this is your first full Level 3 qualification.
  • You are 19-23 and taking a full Level 4 qualification and do not already have a full Level 3 qualification (fees/loan payable for tuition fees, exam fees and course costs).
  • You are 19-23 taking a foundation learning course (Entry Level or Level 1), don’t already hold a full Level 2 qualification and this course will help you progress to Level 2.
  • You are studying GCSE English and maths and don’t already have a grade 4 or above in these.
  • You are a 19+ ESOL student who is not on active benefits (tuition fees, exam fees and course costs will be payable).
  • You are a 19+ student who is directly referred by Jobcentre and in receipt of benefits.
  • You are 19-23 with an Education Health and Care Plan (EHCP).

If you earn less than £15,736 per annum you may be eligible for fully waived fees on a range of courses at Level 2 or below. To enrol, you will need to bring in evidence such as a contract of employment or a wage slip no more than three months old before your learning start date.

*Please note, to be considered 19+ and unemployed (in terms of eligibility for financial support) you fall into one of the following categories:

  • You receive Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA), including those receiving National Insurance credits only
  • You receive Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) and are in the Work-related Activity Group (WRAG)
  • You receive Universal Credit, earn either less than 16 times the national minimum wage a week or £330 a month and are determined by Jobcentre Plus (JCP) as being in a work-related requirements group, work preparation group or work-focused interview group.
  • You are released on Released on Temporary Licence (ROTL) and studying outside a prison environment and are not funded through the Offenders’ Learning and Skills Service (OLASS).
  • You receive other state benefits and earn either less than 16 times the national minimum wage a week or less than £330 a month.
  • You want to be employed (or progress into more sustainable employment) and earn less than 16 times the national minimum wage a week or £330 a month) and your course is directly relevant to employment prospects and the local labour market needs.

Employed learners on Level 2 courses and below, earning less than £16,009.50 annual gross salary may also be exempt from some fees. Please note, you will need evidence of your earnings. This may include a contract of employment or a wage slip that is less than three months old.

Adults under 24 studying for their first full Level 2 qualification may be eligible for free tuition subject to status and dependent on the course. Please contact us for more information.

Paying fee

All students will be expected to make arrangements to pay their fees at the time of enrolment. The college accepts payments by cheque and all major debit and credit card. Payments can be made in full or over 6 instalments via a recurring card payment plan.

Instalment payments are allowed on long courses (over 20 weeks) with a minimum value of £100 and an initial payment of 25% of the course fee, with the rest of the fee payable over 6 monthly instalments.
Card payments can be made using the online payment portal.
