Course overview

Do you want to work in the NHS or the care sector? This short 6-week free course will help you to either begin or further progress your career in care. The course will provide you with the knowledge and skills to complete the theory-based components of the ‘Care Certificate’. The Care Certificate is an essential certificate needed to work in the sector and are an agreed set of standards that define the knowledge, skills and behaviours expected of health and care roles. Candidates already working in the sector may also be able to complete the practical based aspect of the certificate.

The 6-week course will be delivered either at Harrogate College, or at Ripon Community House on a Friday (0900-1500).

At the end of the 6-week block, you will be offered the opportunity to interview for a Care Support Worker role at Harrogate District Hospital. You will also take part in a Careers in Care information session provided by Harrogate District NHS Foundation Trust to give you the confidence to decide where you want your career in care to take you.

  • Entry Requirements

    The course is ideally suited to individuals who are new to the care sector and have recently gained employment.There are no specific entry requirements for the course and we will accept applications from those who are interested in a career in the sector.

    All applicants will be reviewed for their suitability.

  • Who is this course for?

    This is a free course suitable for any individual who would like to progress their career into the care profession and is ideally suited to individuals who have recently gained employment in the sector. 

    However, all applicants will be individually assessed for their suitability. This course is normally designed to support individuals normally resident in York & North Yorkshire..

    Information and Guidance – working in the sector will also be provided i.e. CV writing, interview and presentation skills and practice (as appropriate).

  • Careers/Progression

    This course is designed to support individuals normally resident in York & North Yorkshire to develop skills that will help them to successful build a career within care. Information gained by completing the certificate may also be used towards other existing qualifications and apprenticeships in the sector.

    The course offers the opportunity of an interview with the Harrogate and District NHS trust for a role at Harrogate Hospital.

  • Assessment Types
    Some of the Care Certificate standards include things that individuals working in care need to know and are able to do in their role. This will include assessment such as the completion of the Care Certificate Workbook via activities and research carried out in addition to observations that may take place with an existing or future employer.
